Charleston area landfills and dump sites: where your debris can go

Household trash and construction debris go to different classes of landfill. Below: what each site takes, the rates it posts, and its hours where published.

Mon-Fri 6am-5pm, Sat 7am-12pm

Charleston area landfills follow the state’s class rules: Class 2 landfills take only construction and demolition (C&D) debris, and Class 3 landfills take household trash and nearly everything a Class 2 takes except land-clearing debris.1 This guide covers five tri-county landfills: Berkeley County Landfill, Bees Ferry, Oakridge, Carolina Landfill, and Spring Grove.

Rates and rules differ by site. Call before you load.

Class 2 vs Class 3: which landfill takes what

Class 2 covers C&D debris such as land-clearing debris, asphalt, concrete, shingles, lumber, bricks and blocks, and furniture. Class 3 adds household (MSW) waste but takes no land-clearing debris and no infectious or hazardous waste.1

State rules also let Class 2 sites take treated lumber, plasterboard, dry paint cans, floor covering, cut tires, mattresses, and box springs.2 They bar liquid paint and paint thinner, fluorescent and HID lamps, computers, TVs, microwaves, and waste contaminated by petroleum products, PCBs, solvents, wood preservatives, or pesticides.3

Class 3 sites cannot take hazardous waste, lead-acid batteries, yard trimmings, whole tires, used motor oil, or large appliances.4

Where to take each kind of load

  • Remodel, roofing, and demo debris (C&D): Berkeley County Landfill posts $100 per ton with a 1-ton minimum.5 Bees Ferry does not accept construction and demolition waste from private or commercial haulers.9 Dorchester County residents can use C&D containers at five county convenience sites, but contractor and commercial dumping there is banned: a misdemeanor with a fine of up to $500 and/or 30 days.16
  • Household trash (MSW): $57 per ton at Berkeley, no minimum listed.6 $100 per ton at Bees Ferry.8
  • Yard debris: $50 per ton at Berkeley, with a 1-ton minimum.6 $59 per ton through McGill Environment Systems at the Bees Ferry Compost Facility, with a one-ton maximum.8 Dorchester County residents can take leaves, shrubs, and limbs up to 4 feet long to Miles Jamison or Sandy Pines. No stumps.17
  • Tires: Berkeley charges $400 per ton for truck and passenger tires, or $150 per ton with in-state purchase documentation.18 Bees Ferry charges $150 per ton.8

Berkeley County Landfill

The 1-ton minimum bites on small loads. At the scale house rate, a 600 lb load of C&D still bills as 1 ton: $100.

The county’s codified FY 23-24 fee schedule says $50.00 per ton for C&D, with a 2-ton minimum for trucks with more than 2 axles.19 Two county sources, two rates. Call (843) 572-4400 before you load.7

The scale house takes in-state checks with a copy of the signer’s driver’s license, Visa or MasterCard, and cash.20 Burnt materials, creosote-treated poles, railroad ties, friable asbestos, and items containing lead-based paint are handled as special waste, and industrial special waste needs pre-approval.21

Bees Ferry Landfill

Bees Ferry’s C&D ban names private and commercial haulers.9 If you plan to haul your own remodel debris there, call (843) 571-0929 first and ask whether the ban covers you.10

Charleston County household garbage goes to Bees Ferry or to one of two transfer stations, which send it on to Oakridge.22

The state’s FY2025 report puts Bees Ferry’s remaining capacity at 12.4 years at the permitted disposal rate, or 20.7 years at the current rate.23

Oakridge, Carolina Landfill, and Spring Grove

Oakridge. WM’s 2014 fact sheet says it does not accept CFC (Freon) items, hazardous waste, lead acid batteries, liquid waste, whole tires, or yard debris.11 The Oakridge hours in the table come from the same 2014 sheet.12 Dorchester County sends its household garbage there.24

Carolina Landfill. Dorchester County calls it Carolina Waste Landfill, lists the same 355 Harrison Rd address, and says yard debris that does not meet its convenience-site rules can go there for a fee.17 The county also sends C&D debris and furniture from its convenience sites there.24

Spring Grove. Of the four commercial Class 2 landfills the state lists in the tri-county, Spring Grove took the most in FY25: 290,733 tons, with 48 years left.14 Its address and hours come from a 2015 Republic Services list.15

Hauling it yourself vs a flat-rate dumpster

Statewide FY2025 average tipping fees are $30 per ton at Class 2 landfills and $44 per ton at Class 3.25 Berkeley’s posted $100 per ton for C&D is more than three times the Class 2 average. Bees Ferry’s $100 per ton for MSW is more than double the Class 3 average.

A dump run is your truck, your gas, your back, and a gate fee, every trip. Haul 2 tons of C&D to a gate posting $100 per ton and the tipping fee alone is $200.

Our 15-yard roll-off is $499 flat. That covers delivery, 7 days, up to 2 tons (4,000 lbs) of disposal, and pickup.

EPA puts mixed C&D debris at 417 lb per cubic yard.26 4,000 lbs divided by 417 is about 9.6 cubic yards of mixed debris inside the included weight.

Every load is weighed at the disposal facility. Over 2 tons, it is $85 per ton, billed off the certified landfill scale ticket. Heavy materials may require reduced fill levels, and nothing goes above the top rail. The disposal and weight allowance policy has the details. What stays out of our box

Hazardous waste, liquids, liquid paint, asbestos, propane tanks, aerosols, tires, batteries, and appliances with refrigerant stay out. Electronics need our approval first. Prohibited material can get a load refused, and you pay cleanup and special disposal.

Questions we get

Where can I dump construction debris near Charleston, SC?

C&D debris goes to a Class 2 landfill, or to a Class 3 landfill, which takes nearly everything a Class 2 does except land-clearing debris. The state's FY2025 report lists four commercial Class 2 landfills in the tri-county: Spring Grove, Carolina Landfill, Berkeley County, and Bees Ferry. Bees Ferry does not take C&D from private or commercial haulers, so call any site before you load.

How much does it cost to dump at the Berkeley County Landfill?

The scale house page posts $100 per ton for C&D with a 1-ton minimum, $57 per ton for MSW, and $50 per ton for yard debris with a 1-ton minimum. The county's codified FY 23-24 fee schedule shows $50.00 per ton for C&D, so confirm the current rate at (843) 572-4400 before you go.

What are the Bees Ferry Landfill hours?

Charleston County lists office hours of Monday to Friday 7AM to 4PM and Saturday 8AM to 3PM at 1344 Bees Ferry Rd., phone (843) 571-0929. Those are labeled office hours, so call to confirm when the gate is open. Bees Ferry does not accept construction and demolition waste from private or commercial haulers.

Can tires or a refrigerator go to a landfill in South Carolina?

Not to a Class 3 (MSW) landfill: state rules bar whole tires and large appliances there. Berkeley County and Bees Ferry both post per-ton tire rates, so call and ask how they take them. Tires and refrigerant appliances are also prohibited in our dumpster.

Is it cheaper to rent a dumpster or haul debris to the dump myself?

Hauling it yourself means a truck, gas, your time, and a gate fee. At Berkeley County's posted $100 per ton for C&D, 2 tons costs $200 at the gate. Our 15-yard roll-off is $499 flat with delivery, 7 days, up to 2 tons of disposal, and pickup.
