Two counties, no town hall

Ladson has no town government. It is a Census-designated place, an unincorporated community split between Berkeley County and Charleston County.1 Berkeley has most of it. The 2020 Census counts 12,560 of Ladson’s 15,550 residents in the Berkeley County part and 2,990 in the Charleston County part.2

Your mailing address will not settle the county. The Census ZIP area for 29456 covers land in Berkeley and Charleston counties and touches Dorchester County too.3 Pin down your county before you pick a spot. It decides who you call about the street and where your trash can go. County pages: Berkeley County, Charleston County.

Street or driveway

Driveway placement usually needs no permit. See what a driveway drop takes.

The street depends on who owns the road. SCDOT’s free Street Finder at ris.scdot.org tells you if it is a state road.4 A route marked S-8-xxx is a state secondary road in Berkeley County. S-10-xxx is Charleston County.5

  • Berkeley County road. County Code Sec. 56-4 requires an encroachment permit from the Roads and Bridges Department before anything is installed in a county-maintained right-of-way or easement.6 The county’s online form lists Driveway Pipe, Drainage Easement, Landscaping, Utility, Fence and Other. Dumpsters are not named. The form also says it is not an SCDOT approval.7 Call Roads and Bridges at (843) 719-4129 to confirm.8
  • Charleston County road. In the Charleston County part of Ladson, encroachment permits go through Charleston County Public Works: (843) 202-7600, $35.00 application fee.7
  • State road. SCDOT. Its encroachment permit carries no fee.9

The Census count for Ladson has no Dorchester County part, but the 29456 ZIP reaches into Dorchester. A 29456 address on that side starts at the Dorchester County permit page.

Street placement may need a permit. If it does, you get it. Full rules: Berkeley County dumpster permits and Charleston County dumpster permits.

The half-ton cap

Berkeley County convenience centers take residential waste from Berkeley County residents only. The max is a half ton, about a pickup load or one 12-foot double-axle trailer load. Commercial waste is not accepted there. The Berkeley County Landfill takes it.10 Staff check ID.11

Half a ton is 1,000 pounds, hauled in your own truck. The roll-off includes 4,000 pounds of disposal, 2 tons, loaded at your house.

In the Charleston County part, Charleston County Environmental Management does not collect trash, bulk waste or yard waste. Municipalities and Public Service Districts handle collection.12 The Berkeley centers are for Berkeley County residents, so they are off the table there. Ask whoever collects your trash what they take before you build a pile at the curb.

Some things stay out of a roll-off too. Read what you can put in a dumpster first.

Jobs we haul in Ladson

  • Cleanouts. One load instead of half-ton runs to a convenience center.
  • Yard waste. Limbs, brush, leaves, and clippings. In the Charleston County part, the county does not collect yard waste.12
  • Roof tear-offs. Shingles are heavy. They may need a reduced fill.
  • Remodels. Drywall, cabinets, counters, and vanities.

Load to the top rail, no higher. Not sure about the weight? Text a photo of the pile to (843) 284-3707.

Next step

Ladson questions

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Ladson?

On your driveway, usually not. On a public street, ask whoever owns the road first: Berkeley County Roads and Bridges at (843) 719-4129 on a Berkeley County road, Charleston County Public Works at (843) 202-7600 in the Charleston County part, SCDOT on a state road. If a permit is needed, you get it.

Is my Ladson address in Berkeley County or Charleston County?

Most likely Berkeley. The 2020 Census counts 12,560 of Ladson's 15,550 residents in the Berkeley County part and 2,990 in the Charleston County part. A 29456 ZIP does not settle it, because that ZIP area covers land in both counties and touches Dorchester County, so check which county sends the property tax bill for the lot.

How much is a dumpster rental in Ladson?

$499 flat for a 15-yard roll-off: delivery, 7 days, up to 2 tons of disposal, and pickup. Over 2 tons, it is $85 per ton, prorated by certified scale weight. Extra days are $10 per day.

Can I haul my debris to a Berkeley County convenience center instead?

If you live in Berkeley County, within limits. The centers take residential waste from Berkeley County residents only, a half ton at most, about a pickup load or one 12-foot double-axle trailer load, and they do not take commercial waste. The $499 roll-off includes up to 2 tons of disposal in one haul.

How it works

Infill. Exfill. Landfill.

  1. 01 Infill

We drop it. You load it.

Call or text the address, what you are tossing, and the day. Same day in most cases. Trae, a veteran, sets it on free driveway boards. You get 7 days. Keep it level with the top rail.

  2. 02 Exfill

    We haul it out.

Call or text when it is full or your 7 days are up. We pull it and leave the driveway clear. Need more room? An extra haul is $300.

  3. 03 Landfill

    Weighed. Billed to the ticket.

It crosses a certified landfill scale. 2 tons are included. Past that, $85 per ton, prorated off the ticket. No guessing.
