Daniel Island is City of Charleston, but it sits in Berkeley County. City permits apply to construction and demolition. Homes are also bound by covenants the Daniel Island Property Owners’ Association administers, and exterior changes go through its Architectural Review Board (ARB).1 Two rulebooks. Both decide where the dumpster sits.

Street or driveway

Driveway. A May 9, 2025 POA notice says a dumpster in use must be kept in the driveway or the unit’s designated parking area.2 City Code Sec. 19-494 points the same way: no dumpster in the right-of-way if it can sit on private property.3 Driveway placement usually needs no permit. Setup: dumpster in your driveway.

The street takes paperwork. A dumpster in a Daniel Island street needs a City of Charleston Traffic & Transportation permit. The POA asks you to share that permit with the POA and post it on the dumpster, and it says City inspectors regularly check the island for permits.4 The POA’s 2026 construction fine schedule lists $250 for a dumpster in the street without a City permit.5 The POA also notes that many island streets allow parking on one side only.6

File through the City’s Customer Service portal and allow up to two weeks.7 T&T Permits: 843-724-7378.8 You get the permit. We do not apply for you. Fees and the rest of the process: City of Charleston dumpster permit page.

What city pickup will not take

Your lot sits in Berkeley County, but the City of Charleston handles trash collection.1 Under City Ordinance Sec. 14-51, the City will not collect bricks, lumber, mortar, plaster, roofing, guttering or tree debris made by a hired contractor or builder. Do the work yourself and it takes your construction or renovation refuse only up to 90 gallons per trash collection cycle.9 Concrete, dirt, sod, sand, plaster and carpet are on the City’s unacceptable list for single-family collection.10

Ninety gallons. Do the math on a tear-out. A roll-off sits in the driveway for 7 days while you fill it.

POA dumpster rules

  • Covered. The POA notice says a dumpster should stay covered whenever it is not being used.2
  • Builders. POA construction rules require builders to keep a dumpster on site and cover it at the end of every day. The fine for an uncovered one is $250.11 The same 2026 rules fine $250 for a missing or overflowing dumpster and $500 for one stored on an adjacent property.5
  • Demolition. The 2026 ARB demolition guidelines require the dumpster on the job site before demolition starts and securely covered at the end of the workday and over the weekend when not in use. The applicant gives the ARB a copy of any City street permit.12

POA office: 843-971-9200, [email protected]. The ARB must approve exterior changes, so call before an exterior job starts.6

Jobs we haul on Daniel Island

  • Remodels. Plaster and carpet are on the City’s unacceptable list.10
  • Roofing. Roofing and guttering from a hired contractor stay off the City truck.9 Shingles are heavy and may need a reduced fill.
  • Deck and fence removal. Exterior changes go through the ARB.1 Ask the POA before you tear out.
  • Concrete and dirt. Concrete, dirt, sod and sand are on the City’s unacceptable list.10 Heavy materials may need a reduced fill.

Daniel Island questions

Do I need a permit for a dumpster on Daniel Island?

Not in the driveway, usually, and a May 9, 2025 POA notice keeps a working dumpster in the driveway or the unit's designated parking area. A street drop needs a City of Charleston Traffic & Transportation permit first, and the POA asks you to share it with the POA and post it on the dumpster. You get the permit, not us.

How much is a dumpster rental on Daniel Island?

$499 flat for a 15-yard roll-off: delivery, 7 days, up to 2 tons of disposal, and pickup. Over 2 tons, it is $85 per ton, prorated by certified scale weight. Extra days are $10 per day.

Will City of Charleston trash pickup take my renovation debris?

Not if a hired contractor or builder made it. Under City Ordinance Sec. 14-51, the City will not collect their bricks, lumber, mortar, plaster, roofing, guttering or tree debris. Debris you make yourself goes out only up to 90 gallons per trash collection cycle.

Does the Daniel Island POA have dumpster rules?

Yes. A May 9, 2025 POA notice says a dumpster in use stays in the driveway or the unit's designated parking area and should stay covered when it is not being used. The POA's 2026 construction fine schedule lists $250 for a dumpster in the street without a City of Charleston permit.

How it works

Infill. Exfill. Landfill.

  1. 01 Infill

We drop it. You load it.

Call or text the address, what you are tossing, and the day. Same day in most cases. Trae, a veteran, sets it on free driveway boards. You get 7 days. Keep it level with the top rail.

  2. 02 Exfill

    We haul it out.

Call or text when it is full or your 7 days are up. We pull it and leave the driveway clear. Need more room? An extra haul is $300.

  3. 03 Landfill

    Weighed. Billed to the ticket.

It crosses a certified landfill scale. 2 tons are included. Past that, $85 per ton, prorated off the ticket. No guessing.
