Concrete dumpster rental: how much fits in 2 tons
Concrete, brick, dirt, and rock hit the weight limit with most of the can still empty. Here is how much of each fits in 4,000 lbs, and what a fuller load costs.
Mon-Fri 6am-5pm, Sat 7am-12pmA 15-yard concrete dumpster rental from RO RO Rentals carries about 2.2 to 4.7 cubic yards of broken concrete inside the $499 flat rate, going by published weights of 1,855 and 860 lb per cubic yard.12 Dirt reaches 2 tons at about 4.3 cubic yards, rock at about 4, and whole brick at about 1.3.34 Weight past that is $85 per ton, billed off the certified landfill scale ticket.
Heavy debris runs out of weight long before it runs out of space. Plan the load by the pound.
What $499 covers on a concrete dumpster rental
$499 flat gets you a 15-yard roll-off: delivery, 7 days, up to 2 tons (4,000 lbs) of disposal, and pickup. The can holds 405 cubic feet. Each extra day is $10. Each additional haul is $300.
Every load is weighed at the disposal facility. You pay by certified scale weight, not by how full the can looks. The disposal weight allowance policy spells it out.
How much fits in 4,000 lbs
Divide 4,000 by the published weight of one cubic yard. That gives the cubic yards you can load before overage starts.
| Material | Lb per cubic yard | Fits in 4,000 lbs | Share of the can | Each yard past that adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Broken concrete (EPA)2 | 860 | About 4.7 cu yd | About a third | About $37 |
| Asphalt paving (EPA)2 | 773 | About 5.2 cu yd | About a third | About $33 |
| Dirt and sand (EPA)3 | 929 | About 4.3 cu yd | Over a quarter | About $39 |
| Rock and gravel (EPA)3 | 999 | About 4 cu yd | About a quarter | About $42 |
| Loose scrap concrete (SC DHEC)1 | 1,855 | About 2.2 cu yd | About a seventh | About $79 |
| Whole brick (SC DHEC)4 | 3,024 | About 1.3 cu yd | Under a tenth | About $129 |
The last column prices one cubic yard of that material at $85 per ton.
Concrete carries two numbers. EPA lists C&D concrete debris, large or small, with or without rebar, at 860 lb per cubic yard.2 SC DHEC’s sheet carries that same 860 and also lists loose scrap concrete at 1,855.1 At 1,855, the allowance runs out at about 2.2 cubic yards instead of 4.7. Plan on the heavy number.
Run 8 cubic yards of broken concrete both ways. At 860, that is 6,880 lbs, 1.44 tons over, about $122.2 At 1,855, it is 14,840 lbs, 5.42 tons over, about $461.1 Load 8 cubic yards of dirt at 929: 7,432 lbs, about 1.7 tons over, about $146.3 Each adds to $499, if it goes out in one haul.
None of these sources gives a weight for concrete block. Text a photo of the block pile to (843) 284-3707 before you load it.
Patio, driveway, and slab removal
A slab still in the ground is the easiest load to estimate. Iowa DOT says normal-weight concrete typically weighs 140-150 lb per cubic foot at 5 to 8 percent air content.5 A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so one solid cubic yard is 3,780 to 4,050 lbs. About one cubic yard of slab uses the whole allowance.
Measure length and width in feet. Measure thickness at an edge and divide the inches by 12. Multiply the three to get cubic feet. Multiply that by 140 and by 150 for a low and high weight.
At 4 inches thick, 4,000 lbs covers about 80 to 86 square feet of slab. Sample sizes:
| Slab, 4 inches thick | Weight at 140-150 lb per cu ft5 | Over 2 tons | Overage at $85 per ton |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 × 10 ft pad | 3,733 to 4,000 lbs | None | None |
| 10 × 10 ft patio | 4,667 to 5,000 lbs | 0.33 to 0.5 tons | About $28 to $43 |
| 12 × 16 ft patio | 8,960 to 9,600 lbs | 2.48 to 2.8 tons | About $211 to $238 |
| 12 × 20 ft driveway section | 11,200 to 12,000 lbs | 3.6 to 4 tons | About $306 to $340 |
The overage column assumes the whole slab goes out in one haul, on top of the $499 flat rate. The certified scale ticket sets the real number, not this table. To run your own job, open the dumpster rental cost estimator and pick “Concrete, brick, or dirt.”
Big slabs need a call first. Heavy materials may require reduced fill levels, so a slab that size may take an additional haul at $300. Send the measurements before you book.
Load it low and flat
Spread heavy debris across the floor of the can. Heavy materials may require reduced fill levels. Debris goes no higher than the top rail on any load. On concrete or dirt, you hit the weight well before that.
Why the curb will not take it
Check your town before you plan on the trash truck.
- Goose Creek. Code Sec. 93.076 excludes shingles, bricks, concrete, rocks, and similar materials from city collection, at the owner’s expense.6 Debris a contractor generates must be removed by the contractor by the end of each work week.6
- Mount Pleasant. The Town cannot collect bricks or concrete, or contractor-generated debris from construction, demolition, remodeling, or landscaping.7
- City of Charleston. Concrete, dirt, sod, and sand are listed as unacceptable waste in routine single-family collection.8 Under City Ordinance Sec. 14-51, the City will not collect bricks or mortar generated by a hired contractor or builder.9
A roll-off is the way out. Crews pulling flatwork across Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties can start with contractor dumpster rentals. RO RO Rentals is veteran-owned and operated: CAGE 193Y7, SAM UEI WDR4NMF8JJF1.
What stays out of a heavy load
Concrete, brick, block, dirt, and rock are not on the prohibited list. Keep these out:
- Hazardous waste of any kind.
- Liquids, oils, fuels, chemicals, and solvents.
- Concrete sealer, stain, or paint that is liquid or partly liquid.
- Asbestos.
- Propane tanks, aerosol cans, and gas cylinders.
- Tires, batteries, and automotive fluids.
If the dirt is soaked with oil or fuel, text a photo before it goes in. Restricted materials need approval before delivery. A load with prohibited material can be refused, and you pay the cleanup and special disposal. The full list is in the prohibited and restricted materials policy.
Where the can sits
A driveway spot usually needs no permit. Street placement may need one, and getting it is on you. Check the dumpster permit rules for your town before delivery day.
Next step
Call or text (843) 284-3707 with three things:
- The address
- What you are tossing: the material, and slab measurements if you have them
- The day you need it
Text a photo of the pile or the slab to the same number for a second look at the weight. Or request a quote online.
Questions we get
How much concrete can you put in a 15-yard dumpster?
About 2.2 to 4.7 cubic yards of broken concrete fits inside the 4,000 lbs included. SC DHEC lists loose scrap concrete at 1,855 lb per cubic yard and EPA lists C&D concrete debris at 860, so plan on the low end. Heavy materials may require reduced fill levels, and a concrete load stays well below the top rail.
How much does it cost to get rid of a concrete patio?
$499 flat covers delivery, 7 days, 2 tons of disposal, and pickup. Past that, weight is $85 per ton off the certified landfill scale ticket. A 10 by 10 foot patio 4 inches thick weighs about 4,667 to 5,000 lbs at Iowa DOT's typical 140-150 lb per cubic foot for normal-weight concrete, which adds about $28 to $43.
Can you put dirt in a dumpster?
Yes. Dirt is not on the prohibited list, but it is heavy. EPA lists dirt and sand at 929 lb per cubic yard, so about 4.3 cubic yards reaches the 4,000 lbs included.
Will the city pick up broken concrete and brick?
Not in Goose Creek, where city code excludes bricks, concrete, and rocks from city collection. Mount Pleasant cannot collect bricks or concrete. The City of Charleston lists concrete, dirt, sod, and sand as unacceptable for routine single-family collection.
Do I need a permit for a concrete dumpster?
Not usually if it sits in your driveway. Street placement may need a permit, and getting it is on you. Check your town's rules before delivery day.
