Folly Beach is its own city in Charleston County, with a mayor and council. City limits take in the six-mile-long Folly Island plus smaller islands and marsh reaching back to James Island.⁠¹ Inside city limits, start with the City.

Street or driveway

Know whose road it is. The City’s 2015 comprehensive plan says SCDOT maintains most of the roads, 24 miles, and the City has the other 8.⁠³ On a state road, ask the City when you apply whether SCDOT has to sign off too. Building permit means a dumpster on site

Permitted construction job? Then the dumpster is not optional. The City’s permitting procedures require one on site, and the 2026 permit application says the dumpster and toilet must be provided onsite at all times.⁠⁷ Our $499 covers the dumpster only.

Bulk pickup runs on appointments

City Public Works picks up furniture, mattresses, appliances and similar household items by appointment only. Set them out without one and Public Works picks them up and cites the owner or agent.
