Can I put a dumpster in my driveway?
Yes. On your own driveway you usually need no permit. Check your covenants, clear the spot, and keep the street open while you load.
Mon-Fri 6am-5pm, Sat 7am-12pmYes, you can put a dumpster in your driveway. On your own property you usually need no permit. The real work is checking your HOA rules, clearing the spot, and keeping the street open while you load.
Here is how to set it up so delivery goes clean and nothing adds to the bill.
Why a dumpster in the driveway works
The driveway sits close to the house, and it is your property. You load at your own pace. No hauling debris across the yard. No dragging it out to the curb. For a garage cleanout, a kitchen tear-out, or a new roof, it is the simple route. See residential dumpster rentals for home cleanouts, remodels, and roof tear-offs.
One size. One flat price. A 15-yard roll-off is $499. That covers delivery, 7 days, up to 2 tons of disposal, and pickup. Every rate is on the dumpster rental prices page.
Driveway permits versus street permits
Driveway or other private property. Usually no permit needed.
Public street. Different story. Street placement may need a permit depending on your city or county. If one is required, getting it is on you. Check with your town before delivery day, not after the can is at the curb.
If the driveway is an option, it is the easier one.
Check your HOA or POA first
Permits come from the government. Covenants come from your HOA or POA, and they can say something different. They may limit whether a dumpster can sit in a driveway, for how long, or where. Yours may say nothing at all. Read them and find out.
Do it before you book. If the board wants to sign off, get that approval in hand before the truck rolls. Finding out after delivery burns rental days you are already paying for.
Worried about the surface
A loaded roll-off is heavy. Pavers, stamped concrete, a cracked slab, or a soft edge where the drive meets the grass all deserve a second look.
- Use the boards. Our driveway protection boards are free and go down under the dumpster.
- Say so when you book. Name the surface and the problem spots.
- Pick the firmest spot. Solid, flat ground beats the soft edge by the lawn.
- Speak up early. Before delivery day. Not when the truck is backing in.
Clear the spot before delivery
You are responsible for clear access and accurate placement instructions. Before delivery day:
- Move vehicles. Cars, trailers, boats, the riding mower.
- Clear the path. Trash bins, planters, hoses, bikes. Anything in the way or where the can will sit.
- Look up. A roll-off truck tilts its bed to slide the can off. Low wires and branches over the driveway get in the way. Tell us about them.
- Call out the tight spots. Narrow entries, sharp turns, gates, a street lined with parked cars.
- Be exact about placement. “Left side of the driveway, close to the garage” beats “out front.”
Blocked access at delivery or pickup can mean a trip charge or a rescheduling fee. A little clearing up front saves that money.
How long it can stay
Your rental time starts on the confirmed delivery date and time. Not the day you start loading. The flat price includes 7 days, so book delivery for when you are ready to work.
If the job runs long, each day past 7 days is $10 per day. Extensions depend on scheduling, so request one early. The rental extension policy spells out how it works.
If the job outgrows one can, each additional haul is $300. Say so when you call.
The dumpster is your responsibility until it is physically removed. When it is loaded, call or text (843) 284-3707 and tell us it is ready.
Keep the street and sidewalk clear
The can sits on your driveway. Keep the job there too.
- Stage debris on your property. Not on the sidewalk. Not in the street.
- Keep the sidewalk open. Your neighbors walk it. No piles, tools, or overflow.
- Load level with the top rail. Nothing goes above it. Cut long boards and limbs to fit instead of letting them hang over the edge.
- Sweep as you go. Nails, shingle grit, and broken glass end up in the street and in tires.
- Clear the path again for pickup. Same rules as delivery.
Watch the weight and what goes in
Shingles, concrete, and dirt are heavy. They hit the weight limit long before the can looks full, and heavy materials may require a lower fill level. Every load is weighed at the disposal facility and billed off the certified landfill scale ticket. Past 2 tons, it is $85 per ton.
No hazardous waste. No liquids, including liquid paint. No tires, batteries, propane tanks, or appliances that hold refrigerant. Restricted items need approval before delivery. A load with prohibited items can be refused, and the cleanup and special disposal charges land on you. The prohibited and restricted materials policy has the full list.
Next step
Call or text (843) 284-3707 with three things:
- The address
- What you are tossing
- The day you need it
Tell us it is going in the driveway. Mention the surface, the HOA, and anything tight about access. If you are not sure it all fits, text a photo of the pile for a straight answer. Or request a quote online.

Questions we get
Do I need a permit to put a dumpster in my driveway?
Usually not. A dumpster on your driveway or other private property typically needs no permit. Move it to a public street and that can change depending on your city or county, and getting the permit is on you.
Will a dumpster damage my driveway?
A loaded roll-off is heavy. If your driveway has pavers, a cracked slab, or a soft edge, say so when you book and pick the firmest spot for the can. Bring it up before delivery day, not when the truck is backing in.
Can my HOA stop me from putting a dumpster in my driveway?
It can. HOA and POA covenants may limit dumpsters, how long they sit, or where they go. Read yours or ask the board before you book, not after the truck shows up.
How long can a dumpster stay in my driveway?
The flat price includes 7 days, counted from the confirmed delivery date and time. Extra days are $10 per day. Extensions depend on scheduling, so ask early.
What if my driveway is blocked when the truck arrives?
Blocked access at delivery or pickup may bring a trip charge or a rescheduling fee. Clear access and accurate placement instructions are on you. Move the cars and clear the path the night before.
