Know which James Island you live in. Property here can sit in the Town of James Island, the City of Charleston, or unincorporated Charleston County.1 The City counts James Island among the areas with unincorporated pockets, which it calls donut holes, that touch City limits but are still under Charleston County jurisdiction.2 Whoever has your parcel decides who you call about the street.

Street or driveway

Driveway first. A dumpster on your driveway usually needs no permit. The driveway guide covers the setup.

In the street, it depends on whose street it is.

  • Town of James Island. The Town requires an encroachment permit from its Public Works Director before any temporary or permanent placement of a structure or object in a Town road right-of-way or drainage easement.3 Applications go to Public Works at 1122 Dills Bluff Road, 843-795-4141, and near a roadway the Town can require a traffic control plan.4 The form lists drainage, driveway, utility, fence, shed, and Other. It does not name dumpsters, so call Public Works to confirm.5 Fees follow the Town’s User Fee schedules, and the Director approves or denies within 30 days of receipt.6 Start early. See James Island dumpster permits.
  • City of Charleston. A dumpster on a City right-of-way needs a dumpster permit first, and the Department of Traffic and Transportation issues it.7 City code bars a dumpster from the right-of-way if it can sit on private property. In the street it must not block traffic, and it needs retro-reflective marking and barricades with flashing lights at each end.8 T&T Permits: 843-724-7378.9 See City of Charleston dumpster permits.
  • Unincorporated Charleston County. Parts of James Island are in neither the Town nor the City.10 A Charleston County Public Works encroachment permit for the public right-of-way carries a $35.00 application fee.11 Call (843) 202-7600 and ask whether your dumpster needs one.12 See Charleston County dumpster permits.

When a street permit is needed, you get it. Have it in hand before the dumpster goes down.

What JIPSD will not pick up

The James Island Public Service District collects trash for more than 7,000 properties on the island. Solid Waste: 843-762-5260.13 If JIPSD is your hauler, its no-collect list is the reason to rent.

JIPSD lists roofing materials, bricks, concrete, and dirt among the items it cannot collect. Same for contractor-generated material, including construction debris and floor coverings.14 Bulky pickup is capped at 2 bulk items, or 1 claw scoop of homeowner-generated material about the size of a 96-gallon roll cart, per week.15

One scoop a week is about one roll cart. A garage cleanout is many times that. A roof gets no JIPSD pickup at all.

Jobs we haul on James Island

  • Roof tear-offs. Shingles are heavy. Tell us the squares and the layers.
  • Remodels. Drywall, cabinets, flooring, fixtures. If a contractor does the work, JIPSD will not take the debris.
  • Cleanouts. Garage, attic, a whole house. Far past 2 bulk items a week.
  • Concrete and dirt. Slabs, pavers, fill. JIPSD will not collect concrete, bricks, or dirt. Heavy material may need a reduced fill.

Load it no higher than the top rail. Not sure about an item? Check what can go in a dumpster, or text a photo of the pile.

How it works

Infill. Exfill. Landfill.

  1. 01 Infill

We drop it. You load it.

Call or text the address, what you are tossing, and the day. Same day in most cases. Trae, a veteran, sets it on free driveway boards. You get 7 days. Keep it level with the top rail.

  2. 02 Exfill

    We haul it out.

Call or text when it is full or your 7 days are up. We pull it and leave the driveway clear. Need more room? An extra haul is $300.

  3. 03 Landfill

    Weighed. Billed to the ticket.

It crosses a certified landfill scale. 2 tons are included. Past that, $85 per ton, prorated off the ticket. No guessing.
