Hanahan is its own city, incorporated in 1973, and its Public Works Department runs weekly trash and recycling pickup. SCDOT and Berkeley County own and operate most roads and streets in Hanahan, and a few are privately owned and maintained.⁠¹ That split decides who you call about a street drop.

Street or driveway

The street is different. Hanahan City Code Sec. 26-64 makes it unlawful to interfere with the free use of any public street, sidewalk or alley without prior written consent from city council.⁠² Sec. 34-35 makes it unlawful to place an obstruction on any street, sidewalk or public way that makes passage difficult, inconvenient, dangerous or impossible.⁠³ Treat a dumpster in the street as covered.

The road owner matters too. The city says Hanahan is served by a mix of state-maintained and county-maintained roads. Its list of state roads puts SCDOT S-8 numbers on streets including Loftis Rd, Woodside Dr, Wedgewood Dr and Palm St. On a county road, ask Berkeley County Roads and Bridges, which takes encroachment applications for the county right-of-way, at (843) 719-4129. What Hanahan pickup will not take

The city’s weekly Brown Trash pickup takes furniture and mattresses. It takes no building materials, such as lumber, siding, doors, windows, cabinets, roofing or flooring.⁠⁸ City collection also does not accept contractor-generated waste, concrete blocks or masonry mixes. Take down a whole tree and the city will not collect the debris. Disposal falls on whoever generated it or the property owner.⁠⁹

The city used to put out construction-debris containers on the 3rd Saturday of each month. It stopped because of the Berkeley County convenience center at 275 Luken Rd.⁠¹⁰ That center takes Berkeley County residential waste only, and pickup-size vehicles only. Larger vehicles, and trailers larger than 12 feet, must use the landfill.⁠¹¹
