Isle of Palms is a city in Charleston County, incorporated in 1953. Wild Dunes, the gated community at the east end, falls under city zoning and under deed restrictions enforced by the Wild Dunes Community Association, whose Architectural Review Board sets its own construction rules.1 There, you answer to both.

Street or driveway

A dumpster on your driveway or other private property usually needs no permit. Setup: dumpster in your driveway.

The street is different. The city code never uses the words “dumpster” or “roll-off.” General rules cover it.2 Sec. 3-1-1 makes it unlawful to obstruct any public street, sidewalk or other public place for any purpose without City consent. Sec. 3-1-2 requires removal within the time the City allows.3

Sec. 3-1-4 requires the Director of Public Works’ consent before building materials go on a street. You say how much space and for how long. The Director can set conditions. Sec. 3-1-5 requires safeguards day and night, such as roping off and lanterns.2 The code does not say whether a roll-off counts as building materials. Ask.

On the city website, that office is now the Public Services Department.2 It sits at 1303 Palm Boulevard, (843) 886-8956.4 Call before you book a street drop. Ask who signs off and what it costs.

On a state-maintained road, ask SCDOT too. Its encroachment permit is permission to work in SCDOT-maintained right-of-way, and SCDOT charges no fee for it.5 Check a road with SCDOT’s free Street Finder at ris.scdot.org.6

If consent or a permit is needed, you get it. We do not apply for you. Details: Isle of Palms dumpster permits.

What city pickup will not take

Bulk pickup has a cap. City collection of building materials, furniture and other bulk trash tops out at about 90 gallons per collection day. The City will not collect roofing shingles, or any building materials or trash generated by a contractor.7

A rollout cart holding construction materials or cleanup debris does not get emptied. The city’s garbage page also puts concrete, cement and lot-clearing debris on its will-not-collect list.8

That is the job a roll-off does: 7 days on your driveway while you fill it.

Wild Dunes rules

Wild Dunes has its own Architectural Review Board standards, revised March 30, 2026. They cover the area inside the security gates, plus some lots on 57th Avenue and 43rd through 45th Avenues.9

  • A construction site needs a dumpster or other receptacle of sufficient capacity.9
  • The dumpster may not sit on an adjoining lot.9
  • Work that needs a dumpster or heavy equipment carries a $1,000 refundable compliance deposit.9
  • A dumpster overflowing for more than 72 hours is fined $500 per day.9

Our rule already says load to the top rail, no higher. Full early? An additional haul is $300, with its own 2 tons. Check with the Community Association before the drop.

Jobs we haul on Isle of Palms

  • Roofing. The City will not collect roofing shingles.7 Shingles are heavy and may need a reduced fill.
  • Remodels. Contractor-generated building materials stay off the city truck.7
  • Concrete and dirt. Concrete and cement are on the city’s no list.8 Same weight warning.
  • Storm debris. Hurricane Hugo struck on September 21, 1989. The city’s plan says it damaged nearly every structure on the island.10

Isle of Palms questions

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Isle of Palms?

On your driveway or other private property, usually not. On a street, City Code Sec. 3-1-1 makes it unlawful to obstruct any public street, sidewalk or other public place for any purpose without City consent, so call Public Services at (843) 886-8956 first. If consent is needed, you get it, not us.

How much is a dumpster rental in Isle of Palms?

$499 flat for a 15-yard roll-off: delivery, 7 days, up to 2 tons of disposal, and pickup. Over 2 tons, it is $85 per ton, prorated by certified scale weight. Extra days are $10 per day.

Will Isle of Palms trash pickup take my renovation debris?

Not much of it. City pickup of building materials, furniture and other bulk trash is capped at about 90 gallons per collection day, and the City will not collect roofing shingles or any building materials or trash generated by a contractor. A rollout cart with construction materials or cleanup debris in it does not get emptied.

Does Wild Dunes have dumpster rules?

Yes. The Wild Dunes ARB Standards, revised March 30, 2026, require a dumpster or other receptacle of sufficient capacity on construction sites and bar it from adjoining lots. Work that needs a dumpster or heavy equipment carries a $1,000 refundable compliance deposit, and a dumpster overflowing for more than 72 hours is fined $500 per day.

How it works

Infill. Exfill. Landfill.

  1. 01 Infill

We drop it. You load it.

Call or text the address, what you are tossing, and the day. Same day in most cases. Trae, a veteran, sets it on free driveway boards. You get 7 days. Keep it level with the top rail.

  2. 02 Exfill

    We haul it out.

Call or text when it is full or your 7 days are up. We pull it and leave the driveway clear. Need more room? An extra haul is $300.

  3. 03 Landfill

    Weighed. Billed to the ticket.

It crosses a certified landfill scale. 2 tons are included. Past that, $85 per ton, prorated off the ticket. No guessing.
