Roofing dumpster rental: how many squares fit in 2 tons
Shingles hit the weight limit long before they fill the can. The math on squares, layers, and overage, and what city trash pickup will not take.
Mon-Fri 6am-5pm, Sat 7am-12pmA 15-yard roofing dumpster rental from RO RO Rentals takes 16 to 18 squares of one-layer shingles inside the $499 flat rate, going by CertainTeed’s published shingle weights.12 Bigger roofs and second layers go past the 2 tons included, and that weight is billed at $85 per ton off the certified landfill scale ticket.
Shingles run out of weight long before they run out of space. Do the math before the tear-off starts.
What $499 covers on a roofing dumpster rental
$499 flat gets you a 15-yard roll-off: delivery, 7 days, up to 2 tons (4,000 lbs) of disposal, and pickup. The can holds 405 cubic feet. Load to the top rail and no higher. Extra days are $10 per day. Each additional haul is $300.
Every load is weighed at the disposal facility. You pay by certified scale weight, not by how full the can looks. The disposal weight allowance policy spells it out.
How many squares fit in 2 tons
Roof size is counted in squares. CertainTeed’s Landmark PRO data sheet sets a square at 100 square feet.2 Use CertainTeed’s published weights as a yardstick:
- Landmark: 211 to 225 lb per 100 square feet, depending on manufacturing location.1
- Landmark PRO: about 231 to 240 lb per square, depending on manufacturing location.2
Divide each into the 4,000 lbs included:
- Landmark: 4,000 ÷ 225 = 17.78 squares. 4,000 ÷ 211 = 18.96 squares.
- Landmark PRO: 4,000 ÷ 240 = 16.67 squares. 4,000 ÷ 231 = 17.32 squares.
Round down to whole squares: 16 to 18 squares of one layer stay under 2 tons. Plan on 16.
Those weights are for the shingles alone. A tear-off also brings nails, felt, drip edge, and any decking you replace. Your old roof may not be a CertainTeed shingle either. Use the numbers to plan, not to call the scale ticket.
Now check it by volume. EPA’s 2016 table lists composition roofing and other asphalt roofing at 731 lb per cubic yard.3 4,000 ÷ 731 = about 5.5 cubic yards. That is a little over a third of a 15-yard can. When the shingles fill about a third of the can, you are near 2 tons. Heavy materials may require reduced fill levels, so a load of shingles may be done well below the rail.
Layers double the weight
Two layers put twice the shingles on every square of roof. A 15-square roof with one layer is 3,600 lbs at 240 lb per square. That stays inside 2 tons. With two layers it comes off as 30 squares of shingles: 7,200 lbs, or 3.6 tons. That is 1.6 tons over.
If you do not know how many layers are up there, find out before you book. Your roofer can tell you.
Bigger roofs and overage
This table uses 240 lb per square, the top of the Landmark PRO range.2
| Roof size | Layers | Shingle weight | Over 2 tons |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 squares | 1 | 3,600 lbs (1.8 tons) | None |
| 20 squares | 1 | 4,800 lbs (2.4 tons) | 0.4 tons |
| 25 squares | 1 | 6,000 lbs (3 tons) | 1 ton |
| 30 squares | 1 | 7,200 lbs (3.6 tons) | 1.6 tons |
| 20 squares | 2 | 9,600 lbs (4.8 tons) | 2.8 tons |
Weight past 2 tons is $85 per ton, added to the $499 flat rate. The 25-square roof runs one ton over: $499 plus $85. The certified scale ticket sets the real number, not this table.
On a big two-layer job, call first with the square count and layer count. Heavy materials may require reduced fill levels. If the roof will not fit in one load, each additional haul is $300. To run your own numbers, open the dumpster rental cost estimator and pick Roof tear-off.
What the trash truck will not take
Check your town before you plan on curbside pickup.
- Goose Creek. City Code Sec. 93.076 excludes shingles, bricks, concrete, rocks, and similar materials from city collection, at the owner’s expense. Debris generated by a contractor must be removed by the contractor by the end of each work week.4
- North Charleston. The City does not collect roofing shingles or trash generated by contractors.5
- City of Charleston. The City lists construction and renovation debris as unacceptable for routine single-family collection.6 Under City Ordinance Sec. 14-51, it will not collect roofing or guttering generated by a hired contractor or builder. It collects construction or renovation refuse generated only by an owner or resident, up to 90 gallons per trash collection cycle.7 90 gallons is about 12 cubic feet. The roll-off holds 405.
- Mount Pleasant. The Town cannot collect contractor-generated debris from construction, demolition, or remodeling, and says the contractor should haul it away.8
A full tear-off needs its own way out. That is the job a 15-yard roll-off does. Roofers running jobs across Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties can start with contractor dumpster rentals. RO RO Rentals is veteran-owned and operated: CAGE 193Y7, SAM UEI WDR4NMF8JJF1.
What stays out of a roofing load
Shingles, felt, nails, flashing, gutters, and torn-out decking are not on the prohibited list. Prohibited items to watch for on a roof job:
- Sealant, paint, or stain that is liquid or partially liquid.
- Propane tanks, aerosol cans, and gas cylinders.
- Solvents, fuels, oils, and chemicals.
- Asbestos. If you do not know what an old layer is made of, ask before it goes in.
- Hazardous waste of any kind.
Restricted materials need approval before delivery. A load with prohibited material can be refused, and you pay the cleanup and special disposal. The full list is in the prohibited and restricted materials policy.
Where the can sits
A driveway spot usually needs no permit. Street placement may need one, and getting it is on you. Look up your town in the dumpster permit guides before delivery day.

Questions we get
How many squares of shingles fit in a 15-yard dumpster?
By weight, 16 to 18 full squares of one layer stay inside the 4,000 lbs included. That comes from dividing CertainTeed's published 211 to 240 lb per 100 square feet into 4,000. A tear-off also carries nails, felt, and decking, so plan on the low end.
How much does a roofing dumpster cost?
$499 flat for a 15-yard roll-off, covering delivery, 7 days, 2 tons of disposal, and pickup. Past 2 tons, weight is $85 per ton off the certified scale ticket. A 25-square, one-layer roof at 240 lb per square is 6,000 lbs, one ton over, which adds $85.
Can I put old shingles out with the trash?
Not in Goose Creek or North Charleston, where city collection does not take shingles. The City of Charleston will not collect roofing generated by a hired contractor or builder, and lists construction and renovation debris as unacceptable for routine single-family collection. A tear-off is a dumpster job.
Does a second layer of shingles cost more to dump?
Yes, once it pushes the load past 2 tons. Two layers put twice the shingles on every square, so a 20-square roof with two layers weighs like 40 squares. At 240 lb per square that is 9,600 lbs, 2.8 tons over the 2 tons included, billed at $85 per ton.
Do I need a permit for a roofing dumpster?
Not usually if it sits in your driveway. Street placement may need a permit, and getting it is on you. Check your town's rules before delivery day.
