Dumpster rental vs junk removal: which one fits your job

Junk removal sells you a crew. A dumpster sells you a box and 7 days to fill it.

Mon-Fri 6am-5pm, Sat 7am-12pm

Hire junk removal when you have a few big items and nobody to lift them. Rent a dumpster when the job throws off debris over several days and you can do the loading. That is the whole dumpster rental vs junk removal call: how much you have, and who lifts it.

How dumpster rental and junk removal work

Junk removal

A crew comes to you. They carry the items out, load their truck, and drive off. You point. They lift.

Each company sets its own price. Before anyone picks anything up, get a quote for the whole job and ask what it covers: labor, the trip, and disposal.

Dumpster rental

We drop a 15-yard roll-off at your place. You load it on your own time. When the rental is up, we haul it away.

Our dumpster rental prices are flat. $499 covers:

  • Delivery
  • 7 days of rental time
  • Up to 2 tons of disposal
  • Pickup

Loading is not on that list. That part is yours. The can has a walk-in door, so heavy pieces can go in on a dolly or a wheelbarrow instead of over the side. Driveway protection boards are free.

Rental time starts at the confirmed delivery date and time. Each day past 7 days is $10 per day. Weight over 2 tons is $85 per ton, billed off the certified landfill scale ticket. Each additional haul is $300.

When junk removal is the better call

Junk removal wins plenty of jobs.

  • A few big items. An old couch, a treadmill, a recliner. A 15-yard box for three things is more container than you need.
  • You cannot lift it. Bad back, no help, heavy stuff upstairs. A crew carries it down. A dumpster does not.
  • No place to set a box. No driveway, a tight lot, or a street where a container is a headache. A junk truck parks, loads, and leaves.
  • One pile, done. Everything is already sitting there and no more is coming. One visit can clear it.
  • Items our box cannot take. Refrigerators, freezers, tires, and batteries are prohibited in our dumpster. Ask a junk removal company whether it takes them before you book.

When a dumpster is the better call

  • Debris comes out over days. Kitchen remodel, bathroom gut, new flooring. Waste shows up a little at a time. The box sits there and catches it. With junk removal, you book a crew every time the pile grows back.
  • Roof tear-off. Shingles come off and go straight in the box. Shingles are heavy, so tell us it is a roof when you book.
  • Full cleanouts. Garage, attic, estate, rental turnover. That is a lot of trips to the curb and a lot of crew time if someone else is doing it.
  • You have help. Family, friends, or your own crew. Your own labor does not show up on an invoice.
  • You want the number up front. $499 flat. Load it fast or load it slow. Inside 7 days and at or under 2 tons, the price does not move.
  • Your schedule, not a crew’s. Load after work. Load on Saturday. Load a little every night.

How to compare the cost

We do not quote anyone else’s prices. Put the two side by side like this.

Junk removal. More stuff means more crew time and more truck space. Get one quote for the entire job, not one truckload. If the company prices by volume, ask how many cubic yards its truck holds.

Dumpster. $499 covers a 15-yard box, which is 405 cubic feet, and up to 2 tons of disposal. Three things raise it:

  • Weight over 2 tons, at $85 per ton off the scale ticket
  • Days past 7 days, at $10 per day
  • An additional haul, at $300

Run your job through the dumpster rental cost estimator. Set that number next to the junk removal quote.

Watch the weight. Concrete, brick, dirt, and shingles use up the included 2 tons long before they fill the space. Heavy materials may require reduced fill levels. Every load is weighed at the disposal facility. A visual estimate does not change the weight charge.

Before you pick the dumpster

A dumpster puts the loading on you. It puts a few rules on you too.

  • Know what stays out. Hazardous waste, liquids, liquid paint, asbestos, propane tanks, aerosols, tires, batteries, and appliances with refrigerant. The full list is in the prohibited and restricted materials policy. For the plain-language version, read what you can put in a dumpster.
  • Pick the spot. Driveway placement usually needs no permit. Street placement may, depending on your city or county, and getting it is on you. The guide to putting a dumpster in your driveway covers placement.
  • Keep the path clear. Blocked access at delivery or pickup can mean trip charges or rescheduling fees.
  • Stop at the rail. Debris cannot go above the top rail.
  • It is yours until it leaves. You are responsible for the dumpster until it is physically removed.

Dumpster rental vs junk removal: the short version

Pick junk removal if:

  • You have a handful of items, not a project.
  • Nobody on your end can lift them.
  • There is nowhere to set a dumpster.
  • Your junk is stuff our box cannot take, and the hauler confirms it will.

Rent a dumpster if:

  • The work runs over days.
  • You or your crew can do the loading.
  • The job is a remodel, a roof, or a full cleanout.
  • You want one flat price before the work starts.

Questions we get

Is it cheaper to rent a dumpster or hire junk removal?

It depends on how much you have and who does the lifting. Our 15-yard dumpster is $499 flat with delivery, 7 days, up to 2 tons of disposal, and pickup. For a few items, get a junk removal quote for the whole job and set it next to that number.

Can someone else load the dumpster for me?

Loading is not part of the $499, so the box is yours to fill. Family, friends, or a crew you hire can load it. You are still on the hook for what goes in and for keeping debris from going above the top rail.

How long do I keep the dumpster?

7 days, starting at the confirmed delivery date and time. Extra days are $10 per day. Extensions depend on scheduling, so ask early.

What if I have items that cannot go in a dumpster?

Refrigerators, freezers, tires, batteries, liquids, and hazardous waste are prohibited in our dumpster. Keep them out of the box. If you are not sure about an item, text a photo to (843) 284-3707 before it goes in.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster at my house?

On your driveway or private property, usually not. Street placement may need a permit depending on your city or county, and getting it is on you.
